Visibility of data history / coverage

Add TDA this week an updated paper on "Historical Data" was approved. The strapline from this was "Plan for Chaos".

In other words, despite all well-intentioned efforts to enforce consistency in the amount of history and data coverage from Data Providers, reality is that (for all sorts of good reasons) the coverage available for different datasets is going to vary. We need to recognise this reality, and consider how to make sure users are informed about exactly what data they are seeing / not seeing. (Including any Clinical Safety implications).

The first step will be capturing (and back-capturing) the data to support this.

This could be quite easy - eg by enhancing the existing capability in the Interweave Console for defining the available FHIR Resources. Currently this has a small optional text field for notes (which is rarely populated). We could replace this with more structured and mandatory data. For example:

  • History Start date (mandatory date)

  • Coverage notes (mandatory and larger text box)

Then it gets more interesting in terms of designing the Portal user experience. We need to make sure users are informed, without being overly intrusive.

Ideas:

  • Enhance the existing "Data Providers" screen to display the above new coverage information in a clear and obvious way. This could include adding a warning flag to highlight any dataset which has less than 1 year of history.

  • Force new users, as a one-off, to view the Data Providers screen and acknowledge that they understand it. (ie similar to the "disclaimer")

  • On all panels, have a "Show coverage" button so that users can easily review the data coverage for that data item if they are interested. (Could include a warning flag if less than 1 year available?)

  • If a Data Provider changes its coverage, then pop up an alert next time users log on eg "HUTH has amended its data coverage. <View details> <Later>". (This would also serve to advertise new datasets to users)

This is just some initial ideas...
